Although he was more well-known as a writer of the west Edward Abbey was an Indiana County native whose writings were shaped by his time growing up near Home, PA. Abbey's parents lived on a small farm outside of Home. not far from Blue Spruce Park. Ed Abbey, like most young people of his day likely visited Cummings Dam and did some swimming here before the county park was established.
His book, The Fool's Progress, is autobiographical in nature and although classified as a work of fiction it contains many references to names of people and places from this area. Of all of Abbey's books it's our personal favorite although not his most critically acclaimed.
