When a portion of the small village of Smicksburg was condemned in the early 1940s to provide a flood control area for Mahoning Dam all remains in the town cemetery were moved to a new cemetery on a hillside along Route 954 well out of town. Somehow this tombstone was never moved and it eventually ended up in Little Mahoning Creek. When the waters in the creek recede the tombstone reappears. There are a few other tombstones remaining in the park that were either overlooked or left when the cemetery was relocated.
