In 1906 Vintondale in Cambria County, PA was the scene of great activity with the construction of 152 coke ovens, coal tipples, mine buildings and other buildings related to the mining and coking of coal. Coke production continued into the 1940s and coal was mined here until 1968.

On this day the Eliza Furnace was dusted in snow. When the furnace was in operation and 'in blast' the temperatures around the furnace would have been so hot that any falling snow would have quickly melted.
