This historic photo shows a scene from the Penn View Mountain Railroad that operated on Penn View Mountain, not far from today's Pine Ridge Park. The scenic tourist train was owned by Mr. Sloan Cornell and operated from 1964 to 1973. The rail line ran from the small village of Strangford up the mountain to an overlook on Penn View Mountain. No remains of the railroad exist today. Mr. Cornell later operated several other tourist trains including the Knox & Kane Railroad and the Gettysburg Railroad.
If salamanders had cell phones this is what a 'selfie' would look like. This one is a Wehrle's Salamander photographed near Rochester Mills, PA. Only the top of the jaw opens to allow its tounge to flick out and catch prey. Salamanders will pretty much eat anything they can get in their months but primarily they feed on ants, beetles, worms and any bugs that crawl around the forest floor.
The Armerford Bridge is located approximately one-half mile west of Dilltown, PA spanning Blacklick Creek. At 225 feet it is the longest bridge on the Ghost Town Trail.. Constructed in 2009 the bridge features a three arch design and riding a bicycle over it is a unique experience. The original railroad bridge at this location was washed away during the 1977 Flood. The bridge is named for the former small village of Armerford and the nearby coal mine.
