You can generally tell the sex of a box turtle by the color of their eyes. Males have red eyes while female eyes are more brown in color.
This male box turtle was seen trying to cross Wayne Avenue south of the IUP campus. The five lane highway here poses a major challenge for migrating turtles and we were happy to rescue this one before he was run over. We moved him to the other side of the road and hope that he has safe travels from here on out. We estimate this male was about 20 years old.
Hemlock Lake is a great place to do some flat water kayaking. The peaceful waters of the 60 acre lake are inviting to explore.
