We came across this beautiful Gray Fox that had unfortunately been struck by a car on one of our local roads. Pennsylvania has both Red and Gray foxes. The gray can climb trees--it is the only member of the canine family with this ability. Red and gray foxes are small, agile carnivores belonging to the same family (Canidae) as the dog, coyote and wolf. Both red and gray foxes are found throughout Pennsylvania. They are intelligent predators with extremely sharp senses of sight, smell and hearing (a fox can hear a mouse squeal at about 150 feet). They can live for 10 - 12 years in the wild.
The only known photo of the construction of Cummings Dam (now Blue Spruce Park). This photo shows the construction of the first dam, a second dam was built over top of this one in 1912.
This year's runnning of the 7k Race for the Trail began under very warm and humid conditions for the nearly 150 runners. About half way through the race a thunderstorm moved in which provided some refreshing relief. The race is sponsored each year by the Indiana Road Runners Club, who make an annual donation in support of the Ghost Town Trail. This is a photo of the finish line as spectators wait for the first runners to arrive.
