One of the pleaasures of having winterberry in our gardens is the color they add to the winter landscape, especially after a snowfall. The berries are eaten by birds but usually not until later in the winter in this particular garden.
We had our first snowfall of the 2015-2016 winter season at Blue Spruce Park this year on December 2nd.
When we opened a container that was temporarily housing two Valley & Ridge Salamanders we discovered they appeared to be tied up in knots. After documenting them and recording their features for a research study they were returned to their hillside homes.
The Valley & Ridge Salamander (Plethodon hoffmani) is found in our park system and in various places of appropriate habitat in Indiana County.
