By December Garter Snakes have entered their underground homes and crevices for the winter where they can often be found in large numbers together. They enter a phase that is known as brumation, or hibernation-like state.
The stone arch bridge is one of three arch bridges in this area. The two other arch bridges are located on the West Penn Trail as it passes through the Conemaugh River Lake.
The piers of the abandoned Cokeville Bridge once carried traffic across the Conemaugh River near Blairsville. Today you can view the bridge piers from the Blairsville Riverfront Trail. Cokeville's name is derived from the large Isabella iron furnace operation that was operated there to produce coke for the steel industry.
