John P. Saylor, a former Congressman from Johnstown, PA was an ardent supporter of the outdoors. From 1948 to 1973 he helped protect many scenic and wilderness areas throughout the United States. Saylor Park in Burrell Township is named in his honor.
At the location of our Tunnelview Historic Site there once existed a canal aqueduct and tunnel. The combination of the two features so close to one another was very unique. The tunnel still exists but is not accessible. The stones from the aqueduct were used in other bridges when it was removed. However, the foundation stones in the river bed can still be seen when the river level is low. The photo appears in Clarence Stephenson's 175th Anniversary History of Indiana County.
