This abandoned concrete bridge once lead to the bustling little village of Claghorn. The town was named for Clarence Claghorn a mining engineer and official with the Vinton Colliery Company. The town remained in existence until the early 1940s when homes were still being rented out. Nothing remains today, except the bridge.
This buggy or shuttle car is located in Vintondale along the Ghost Town Trail. It is situated in a small historical site constructed as an Eagle Scout project. In the background of the photo the mountain is undergoing surface mining... yes we still mine coal here.
A light snow was falling when we stopped at the Buena Vista Furnace on an early March day.
