Turtleheads (Chelone glabra) grow in moist soil throughout our parks and trails. They are a mid to late summer bloomer in our area. The flower is also sometimes called Snakehead but Turtlehead seems right to us. The flower shape and opening looks like the mouth of a turtle.
Along the Ghost Town Trail you will find several large rock cuts made during the construction of the railroad here in the early 1900s. During the winter the cuts, like this one at Twin Rocks, have interesting ice formations. If you enjoy geology the cuts are good places to view rock layers and formations.
We call it the BRT for short. Although it is one of our shortest trails, at a little less than 2 miles, it is one of our most remarkable. Through the combined efforts of many partners this trail became a reality. When first proposed the idea of building a trail on an Army Corps of Engineers flood plain seemed like a remote possibility. But the volunteers and community groups in Blairsville persevered and today their much beloved trail is a reality and a source of community pride.
