A more recent photo of the Bairdstown Bridge shows the second bridge that was constructed here after the covered bridge of the 1800s was no longer in use. As of March 18, 2015 the flood waters of the Conemaugh river were at the level of the bridge deck. Recent snowmelt and waters being backed up by the Conemaugh Dam caused the waters to rise.
Blairsville's Bairdstown Bridge has been in the news lately due to flooding. At the current bridge location this large covered bridge once stood. This was a toll bridge that featured a unique Wernwag Truss. The photo is from the collection of the late Bill Graff, Sr. who maintained an avid interest in Indiana County's history throughout his lifetime.
Indiana County's Amish and Mennonite communities operate numerous one room school houses. As we drive throughout the County we notice that recess, no matter the weather, is a big part of the school day. Baseball, volleyball, kickball and other games are popular activities.
