The Goldenseal is a regarded as a species of concern in PA due to its limited numbers. After flowering the plant produces this red seed pod. We are fortunate to have Goldenseal in our parks in areas that are protected.
A wet snow highlights the intricate pattern of every twig and stem in these woods.
Our most common snake is the Eastern Gartersnake, a non-venemous snake. This is a common medium sized striped snake with highly variable coloration. The yellowish stripes are usually well defined, though the middorsal stripe may be absent in some populations. The background dorsal color may be green, olive to brown or black.
