These brilliant orange colored bracket fungi were found growing on an oak tree at Blue Spruce Park.
On hillsides with acidic soils the intricate leaves of the Rattlesnake Plantain can be found. In our area they are often found in areas of abandoned Christmas tree plantings. The Rattlesnake Plantain is actually an orchid and when mature sends up a spike with tiny white flowers.
Screech owls come in two color phases, a red phase shown here, and a grey phase. Usually by mid-August we begin to hear Screech owls calling in our parks. The photo is by Margaret Higbee of the Todd Bird Club. our thanks to Margaret for allowing us to share this photo of a sleeping owl.
