Little Mahoning Creek is one of the most scenic and biologically diverse areas in Indiana County. The creek is home to the Eastern Hellbender and many other plant and animal species in the hemlock forests that line the stream and nerby hillsides.
The Blacklick Valley Natural Area contains six miles of hiking and walking trails that are also suitable for cross-country sking. Many of the trails in the floodplain portion of the property are lanes that meander through Christmas tree plantings and former farm fields.
Hoar frost and ice on the waters of the North Branch of Blacklick Creek provide the setting for this winter scene of the Eliza Furnace in Vintondale, PA. This is the 170th winter, since its construction in 1846, that the furnace has been here. Posted 2.12.16
