Swimming was a popular activity at this early 20th century private park in Indiana County. From the number of people standing on the bridge you can tell this was a popular spot. We always note how well-dressed the people were that visited parks in those early days.
The boating and swimming area at Cliffside Park was created by a log dam built across Two Lick Creek. The park was a private park that operated in Indiana County during the 1920s and 30s. This particular photo looks like it was taken during the early stages of the log dam construction. The finished dam was several rows high. The log dam and park are long gone but in this area of Two Lick Creek large stones can be found stretching across the creek.
Long before we had county parks in indiana County there were private parks. Cliffside Park was one of the most popular parks of the 1920s and 30s. The park was operated by the Antonio Bianco family and had boating, picnicking, concerts, roller skating, dancing and other events. The Indiana Street Railways (trolley line) delivered passengers to the park. The park was located 3 miles south of Indiana, PA on Two Lick Creek about where the interchange for Route 119 and Wayne Avenue is today.
