Turtleheads (Chelone glabra) grow in moist soil throughout our parks and trails. They are a mid to late summer bloomer in our area. The flower is also sometimes called Snakehead but Turtlehead seems right to us. The flower shape and opening looks like the mouth of a turtle.
The Bow Tunnel is one of four tunnels located in Bow Ridge near the Tunnelview Historic Site, just downstream of the Conemaugh Dam. The tunnel ceased being used in 1950 and a 20-foot thick concrete stopper was installed on the upper end to keep the back-up waters from Conemaugh Dam from escaping.
