An early scene of coke ovens in Vintondale. There were 152 ovens constructed here in 1906. Coke made in Vintondlae was shipped to Lackawanna, NY via the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad. Today this location is along the Ghost Town Trail, nothing remains of the coke ovens today. Photo courtesy of the Denise Dusza Weber Collection .
On this day the Eliza Furnace was dusted in snow. When the furnace was in operation and 'in blast' the temperatures around the furnace would have been so hot that any falling snow would have quickly melted.
At the Eliza Furnace you can read a brief history of the furnace at this marker along the Ghost Town Trail.
