All that rermains of the Salem Lutheran Church at this location at Old Smicksburg Park are the entrance steps. As was the custom back then the men sat on one side of the church while the women sat on the other side. This was the second church built on this lot, being constructed in 1899. The church was torn down in 1944 and some wood was used in the construction of the new church on Clarion Street in Smicksburg. The church had to be torn down when the federal government condemned the property for flood control purposes.
The northern terminus of the Hoodlebug Trail is located on Rose Street near the campus of IUP. The sculpture in the left of the photo does not have a name but for many years it was located on the grounds of the Indiana County Courthouse before being moved to the trail after its opening in the year 2000.
When carving out the adjacent hillside in 1854 the railroad created a series of hillside cliffs that Hoodlebug Trail users can view. The extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad to Indiana, PA by 1855 was an important economic event for the developing county seat.
