A recent survey of Hemlock Lake turned up Spotted Salamanders, Red-bellied Snakes, Wehrle's Salamanders, Ring-necked snakes and Eastern Red-backed Salamanders. All found within an area of a few hundred feet of one another. There are a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians right underneath your feet if you take the time to look for them.
These brilliant orange colored bracket fungi were found growing on an oak tree at Blue Spruce Park.
On hillsides with acidic soils the intricate leaves of the Rattlesnake Plantain can be found. In our area they are often found in areas of abandoned Christmas tree plantings.
The Rattlesnake Plantain is actually an orchid and when mature sends up a spike with tiny white flowers.
