This painting by Jacob Sweitzer reportedly depicts Buttermilk Falls. Sweitzer was a primitive artist who lived in the Armagh area from 1848 to 1949. He often painted on the backs of Shredded Wheat cartons. There are other paintings of Buttermilk Falls drawn by Sweitzer.
Buttermilk Falls is fed by Hires Run, a small stream that eventually flows into the Conemaugh River. The amount of water that cascades over the falls depends on how much water Hires run receives from rain runoff. Plan your trip accordingly if you want to see the falls at full flow.
