Bairdstown Bridge Reflections

The 'New' Bairdstown Bridge

The Bairdstown Bridge that exists today appears in the left of the photo. Thew older iron bridge to the right was removed after completion of the new bridge.

Subject to Flooding

One of the perils of building a trail on a floodplain is the threat of occasional flooding or in this case an occasional ice jam. The Blairsville Riverfront Trail is located on the flood control area for the Conemaugh Dam which is located seven miles downstream. As water is backed up in the dam from time to time it reaches the upper limits of the flood contral area in Blairsville.

Several benches are located along the trail for a place to stop and enjoy the trail setting.

Located seven miles downstream of the Blairsville Riverfront Trail.

The Cokeville Bridge Piers

Now abandoned the Cokeville Bridge piers stand as a silent reminder of a once thriving community that was located across the river from the trail.

This image of Blairsville dates from 1871. The bridge shown is the Bairdstown Bridge that replaced a covered bridge that once was located here. The iron bridge shown was later replaced with a larger iron bridge that exists at the site today. Note the gazebo that appears in the image, a gazebo still exists here today but it is a newer one replaced after many years of absence.
